-                                                                Vermon E. Thompson, Jr.

Vernon E. Thompson, Jr., died peacefully at Copley Hospital, on Friday, April 11, 2025, after suffering a stroke at the age of 81. He was born in Limestone, Maine on May 31, 1943; the son of the late Vernon E. and Gladys (Bennett) Thompson, Sr.  He grew up in Limestone, attended schools there and graduated from Limestone High School in 1961.  He then attended Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, ME, for a year before entering the University of Maine at Orono, where he graduated with an associate's degree in engineering in 1965. He then spent the next 33 years working as a highway engineer for the State of Maine.

Vernon was active in the Limestone United Methodist Church, serving on the Board of Trustees and as the Treasurer of the church Men's Club for many years. On November 28, 1987, Vermon married the Rev. Patricia "Pat" Thompson, then pastor of the church and they spent the next 37 years together.

In 1991, while still working for the State of Maine, Vernon and Pat moved to Presque Isle, where she was appointed as the pastor of the Grant Memorial UMC. Vernon served there for several years as a member of the Board of Trustees, as well, before retiring from his position with the State of Maine and moving to Morrisville, VT, Pat's hometown.

He was active in the churches which Pat served in Vermont, spending the most years at the Wolcott United Methodist Church where he served most recently as the Financial Secretary and the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees.

He also worked as the custodian for the Morrisville United Church of Christ and the United Church of Johnson and later an assistant for the Faith Funeral Home in Morrisville.

In his retirement, he enjoyed golfing until he had by-pass surgery in 2015, and he loved to play cards, especially Liverpool Rummy, which he played often with Pat and her family. He always enjoyed family gatherings, whether in Vermont or in Maine. He was a longtime member of the Johnson Seniors Group and served for several years as their treasurer. Vernon was a quiet, gentle soul, with an amazing sense of humor, for which he will be remembered by the many, many people with whom he came in contact. He was also a wonderful, solid supporter of his wife Pat's ministry, traveling with her wherever that ministry took her.  He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Besides his wife, Pat and her family, he leaves a sister, Jane Phair Page, and her husband Norman, along with Jane's three children and their families: Kent (Lori), Ellen (Troy), and Kirk (Kim), and their children.

Services will be held at 11 AM, on Friday, May 23, 2025, at the Wolcott United Methodist Church, followed by a time of fellowship and lite lunch. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Morrisville.
