Spencer A. Slayton

WOODBURY: Spencer Allen Slayton, 82, of Woodbury passed away peacefully on November 15, 2023, in the comfort of his home with family at his side.

He was born January 22, 1941, in Hardwick; the son of the late Glen and Mildred (Fisher) Slayton.  He attended Hardwick schools, graduating in 1959 from Hardwick Academy.

He proudly served in the US Army Reserves and the Vermont Army National Guard. Spencer was Honorable Discharged following 8 years of service.

On January 21,1962, he married Janet Elaine Houston in Hardwick.  Together, they raised three children.

In his earlier years, he was employed by Avon Atkins and various other construction companies in Vermont and Arkansas. He was a ski lift operator on Mount Mansfield, prior to working as a lineman for Hardwick Electric for 7 years.  From 1969 until 1972 he was employed by White Pass & Yukon Railroad as a Brakeman and Conductor in Skagway, Alaska. From 1972 until his retirement in October of 2000, he was an Electrical Lineman for Washington Electric in East Montpelier.

He was a member of the Caspian Masonic Lodge # 87 F&AM   and the American Legion Post # 7, both in Hardwick and he was active in the Woodbury Recreation Organization.   He enjoyed reading, hunting, trapping, fishing, golfing, four wheeling, camping, gardening, and traveling to see family.

Survivors include: his wife, Janet of Woodbury, three children, Raymond Slayton of Alaska, Bradley Slayton and his wife, Brenda and Deanna Slayton Avery and her husband, Gail, all of Woodbury; grandchildren, Jessica, Joe (wife January), Ian (wife Stephanie), Calvin ( wife Mackenzie), Samantha (partner Ashley), Danielle (husband Bunker) Alexander, and Quinn; great-grandchildren, Keira, Sadie (husband Justin), Sawyer, Gavin, Caspian, Emma, Remi, Dawn and a great-great grandson, Asher; brothers, Scott Slayton of East Hardwick, and Stephen Slayton of St. Johnsbury; as well as in-laws, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Stuart Slayton.

Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held at 2 PM on Friday, June 14, 2024, in the Fairview Cemetery in Hardwick.
