Phillip W. Thompson

JOHNSON:  Phillip William Thompson, 75, of Johnson died unexpectedly at his home.

He was born April 7,1948, at the original Copley Hospital location in Morrisville; the son of the late William Wilford Thompson and Amy Odile (Despots) Thompson.  He attended Johnson public school; he studied during his freshman year of school at Rice Memorial High School in Burlington before returning to Johnson. He completed his remaining three years of studies. In 1967, he was a graduate of the last class to graduate from Johnson High School.  Phil lived most of the rest of his life in Johnson, living in his childhood home.
Phil was employed by the State of Vermont for more than 40 years. He worked in several capacities, including, the Survey Department, Highway Department, paint crew, and for the last 20 years he worked as a Rest Area attendant and Capital Welcome Center attendant in Montpelier. He shared his great knowledge of the Vermont roads and attractions throughout the State with the tourists. Following his retirement, he stayed with his mother, making it possible for her to remain in her home. During the winter months, Phil and his mother Amy would spend much time visiting the Florida family. They enjoyed spending time at the Johnson Historical Society. He gave talks and shared his vast local knowledge with the community.  He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He also enjoyed genealogy, ancestry, fall foliage, plants, picking berries, animals and traveling the Vermont roads to see the sites. Phil will be remembered for his generosity to his family and his friendship with the Jerry and Theresa Lehoullier family.

Survivors include: two siblings, Michael Thompson, and his wife Jane, of Morrisville, and Jane Montgomery of Jacksonville, FL.; two nieces, Holly Thompson of Colchester Vermont and Virginia Hodgdon and her husband Jerry of Florida; a nephew, Heath Wheelock, 2 great nephews, Tanner, and Ashton, all of Florida; as well as many cousins in Vermont and Canada.

He was predeceased by his father, William Wilfred Thompson, and his mother Amy Thompson, who died in 2019 at the age of 99.

Graveside Services will be held at 2 PM, on Friday, June 7th, 2024, in the Lamoille View Cemetery in Johnson.
