BETTY LOU K. SMITH

MARCH 9, 1942-JUNE 24, 2026

Washington, VT: Betty Lou K. Smith, 84, of Washington passed away peacefully on June 24, 2026, with her three children at her bedside.

She was born on March 9, 1942, in Fitchburg MA; daughter of Elsie Corwell and Cyrus Beaupre and at 6 Months old she moved to Hardwick VT and was raised by her beloved aunt and uncle (Gertrude and Gerald Martin).  In her earlier years she worked at the Hardwick Diner and Hardwick Ware-knitters.  On July 17, 1962, she married the love of her life, Percy R. Smith, at the United Church in Hardwick VT.  Following their marriage, they moved to Massachusetts and Connecticut for brief periods of time before returning to Vermont.  They settled in Washington VT and had three sons, Curtis, Clint & Dan.  Betty Lou then became a homemaker, raising her three children.  Betty Lou loved her husband, children, grandchildren and daughter-in-law beyond words.  She also loved flower gardening, yard sales with her close friend (Elsie DuBois), and long rides and picnics on country roads with her family.  She would talk for hours on the phone with friends and relatives.  She also loved country music and singing.  She would spend many Friday nights singing country music with her close friend (Linda Safford) playing the guitar.  Betty Lou's smile, cheer, laugh, love of food, and commitment to her family and friends will be forever missed.

Betty Lou is survived by her three sons, Curtis R. Smith, Clint P. Smith, Dan C. Smith and his wife Willissa, and their two sons (grandchildren) Damian R. Smith & Connor M. Smith.  She is also survived by her stepbrother Reed Chesbrough.

She was predeceased by her husband, Percy R. Smith, mother, Elsie Chesbrough, stepfather John Chesbrough, and Father Cyrus Beaupre and stepmother Dorothy Beaupre, her sisters, Mary Lou Bourque and Lorraine Dibler, and her stepsister Helena Spaulding.

A graveside service to honor and celebrate her life will be held at the Fairview Cemetery in Hardwick on Monday, June 29th at 2:00 p.m.
