Allan A. Tyler

Allan Averbeck Tyler, formerly of Stow, MA, passed away on September 9, 2024. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to Walter & Carolyn (née Averbeck) Tyler. He grew up on Staten Island, was graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1952, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1956 from UVM.

He served in the U.S. Army on Active Duty for two years and was based at Fort Dix, NJ at the close of the Korean Conflict. He continued in the Army Reserves for five years after his initial duty and was honorably discharged in 1963.

He met Janet Smalley through his Acacia frat brother from UVM, Alan Smalley. They married in 1958 in her hometown of Johnson, VT.

From UVM, he became an insurance agent with Industrial Risk Insurers. Over his 40+yr career there, he began as a traveling field inspector around New England. He always said it was his favorite job - being paid to drive all around New England and visit the inner workings of factories and businesses. He eventually moved up through the ranks to become one of the Fire-Loss protection agents within the business. Allan never outgrew his love for driving long distances and his love for New England and all its quirky backroads

His love for tinkering on anything earned him the nickname, "Tilly", from his very close friends - loosely referenced from 'Tillie the Toiler', the name of a comic strip character from his childhood.

During the Pandemic, he moved from his home of 60+ years in Stow and into Concord Park Senior Living followed by CareOne at Concord a few years later. Many may remember his large, white, historic colonial home, "Ten Acre Farm", where Applefield Farm now has its farmstand.

Allan is remembered by his younger sister, Anne Tyler-Rudy (Dr. Don), and his children, Andrew in Colorado, Carolyn (Merle Knight) in Vermont, and Susan Tyler in Massachusetts, six grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, and his beloved labradoodle, Edgar. He was predeceased by his wife, Janet, and older sister, Joan Tyler-Delapp.

Allan has been laid to rest next to his wife in the Lamoille View Cemetery in Johnson, VT.
